Market session: estimation Groningen production, Investment plan 2022, Future of the Dutch gas market

Save the date: November 25, 2020, 9.30am - 12pm

Market consultation of the planning assumptions for the Groningen production estimation

In the Gas Act, GTS has been given an advisory role in the completion of the Groningen field. In this we determine how much Groningen volume and capacity is required from the point of view of security of supply. GTS uses assumptions for the determination of Groningen production. GTS will involve the market in determining these starting points. We will publish the necessary information for the gas year 2021/2022 on our website. The consultation period will start from that moment and will last until and including December 4th. After the consultation period, we will send our estimation as an advice to the Minister of Economic Affairs (end of January 2021).

Investment plan 2022

We will publish our next investment plan (IP2022) on January 1st 2022. With the investment plan, ACM and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy give permission for our investments. During the information session, we will discuss the process we are going through to arrive at the IP2022 and explain the differences in this area compared to the previous IP. We also wish to share the scenarios that we will be using in our IP with market parties.

Update Future of the Dutch gas market

The accelerated decline in gas production from the Groningen field has an impact on both the Netherlands and our neighbouring countries. For the Netherlands, this will in any case lead to more H-gas imports and fewer exports; Germany, Belgium and France will switch from L-gas to H-gas.

After commissioning of the new nitrogen facility at Zuidbroek in mid-2022, no volume will be needed from the Groningen field in normal winters. For the G-gas market and the H-gas market, the Netherlands will be dependent on H-gas imports from that moment on, because remaining Dutch production will be insufficient to meet demand. Flexibility (seasonal and at a daily level) in volume and capacity will remain necessary for both the G-gas and H-gas market. We will provide an update on the use of G-gas storage facilities.
